Cosmic Construction

Kids are naturally curious about the world they live in, and engineering will help build on that curiosity. Welcome to Carmelo’s world of construction where your imagination can be unleashed. Have you ever wondered how bridges with enormous spans can stand hundreds of feet above land or water? In this class, you will design, build, and test balsa wood bridges as a way to study structural loads. You will also have the opportunity to design and build a skyscraper and put it to the test on our earthquake simulator! Learn how to apply the downward force of gravity to accelerate balls down a series of crazy ramps, gears, and levers with our amazing contraption set. Design a ski jump that makes your marble jump into a can without bouncing on the floor. How far can the marble jump and still land in a can? Become a mechanical engineer and design and construct a roller coaster, sails for sailboats, and egg drop vehicles. Well, don’t just sit there come and build with us this coming winter session. $450

Winter 2018 / 2019

Grossology: An impolite Study

Like it or not, the kids have voted and want to study bodily functions. Snot, flatulence, vomit and more — they just can’t get enough “gross.” Make fake snot and see why this green, nasty substance is out to protect the human body. Dissect an owl pellet, and see how this regurgitated piece of grossness can teach you about food chains, food webs, and predator-prey relationships. Learn how to make and use a stethoscope and listen to a heartbeat or other body sounds. Make drinkable blood and learn about its true color and consistency. Yum! Insulate your body with fat and see just how it protects some animals in the arctic winter. Study saliva, ear wax, and many other impolite bodily
functions this coming fall session. $450

Charge me up! A beginner’s study in electricity and energy

Scientists are certain to be fully charged as they join Carmelo the Science Fellow and jump into the shocking world of electricity. Learn about the importance of electricity in our daily lives and how its development may impact the environment. From insulators and conductors to the hair-raising properties of static electricity, your child will become an expert of this powerful force of nature. In order to fully understand the complex behavior of electricity, young scientists will be amazed as they generate lightning bolts, make cereal dance, bend a water stream, construct an electric circuit, build a light switch, and even design electronic games. Don’t you dare miss this very electrifying class!! $450
